What to buy here

What to look for here

TJ Maxx is an off-price chain owned by TJX: clothing, shoes, bags, cosmetics, home goods and food from well-known brands for less than in regular stores. It's mass-market and mid-range: Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, beauty and skincare. Stock arrives in batches, so every store has its own selection and it changes every week.

In quality and style, TJ Maxx, in my opinion, beats many discount department stores. The selection at TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods is often better than at Ross and Burlington: more mid- and high-end brands and less digging. Americans agree: in the ACSI customer satisfaction ranking, TJX stores (TJ Maxx and Marshalls) came first among discounters in 2026.

It's one of my favorite stores: you can wander between the shelves and displays all day.

  • Jewelry, fine jewelry and watches: there are far more here than at Marshalls or Sierra. You can find real treasures: Gucci and Kurt Geiger costume jewelry, Murano glass, gold, diamonds. Judge the quality by the maker of the specific piece - its name is on the tag or box.
  • Hair tools, including Dyson, hygiene and skincare products, and the LED face masks that are popular right now. I bought a Dyson at TJ Maxx myself - much cheaper than in the official store.
  • Like HomeGoods, there's a shelf of food, usually from Italy: olive oil, pasta, snacks.
  • Home: kitchenware, small furniture and decor.
  • Sometimes you'll find craft and hobby kits and stationery, and before Christmas, Starbucks gift sets.

Shoes at TJ Maxx are women's only. I've never seen men's there, and kids' are rare - maybe flip-flops. For men's and kids' shoes, go to Marshalls.

Some stores have a premium department called The Runway with designer brands, usually behind glass - how to find such a store is below.

My experience: how to shop TJ Maxx and Marshalls

What I've noticed over the years of shopping here

TJ Maxx, Ross and Burlington have separate shelves called Clearance in every department: beauty, shoes, clothing, home. TJ Maxx and Marshalls especially - they organize it very well, with shelves with extra discounts and yellow or red tags. But marked-down items aren't only on those shelves - they very often turn up all over the store.

Marshalls is different from TJ Maxx: Marshalls has more shoes - women's, men's and kids'. At TJ Maxx the shoes are women's only, and there are fewer. But TJ Maxx has a costume and fine jewelry department where very interesting finds turn up from time to time, such as Gucci costume jewelry at low prices.

There are different kinds of TJ Maxx: some have a premium department and some don't, and there is a rule for finding a store with the premium section.

Once at TJ Maxx I saw an employee putting on yellow final-markdown tags. If you see them start re-tagging, this is your chance - don't leave.

How discounts work

How to read the price and where it's lowest

The big waves of markdowns come in January after the holidays and in July: stores make room for the new season and yellow tags are everywhere. This is the Yellow Tag Sale; the winter one usually stretches from January to March, the summer one from July to August. Shoppers call it the J rule, after the first letter of January and July.

There are almost no coupons or promo codes in the stores; all the savings are in the price tags. The system sets prices, not the salesperson, so the same item can cost differently in different stores and even on neighboring racks. New stock arrives several times a week, on days that vary by store - the employees know them.

How to read the price tags

How to read the price and where it's lowest

  • A white tag with no stickers - regular price.
  • A red sticker - markdown. If there are several red stickers, the item has been marked down several times.
  • A yellow sticker - usually the final markdown; it won't get cheaper.
  • A purple tag - an item from the Runway area, designer brands.
  • Compare At is not the price of this model in another store, but TJX's estimate of what a similar item costs at regular retail.
  • There's no official markdown day, although in many stores new stickers appear at the start of the week.

What you can find during markdown season: an example from my shopping trips

How to read the price and where it's lowest

Don't skip markdown season. Go to several different stores, not just one, and the farther they are from tourist areas, the better: tourists rarely stop there. Americans hunt for these finds too and snap up the best, so good items don't last. Here's an example from one of my shopping trips to TJ Maxx in Colorado on January 31, 2026: what was there and at what prices.

Shiseido is a Japanese premium brand, and this set costs $314 in the brand's own stores. At TJ Maxx it was on the shelf next to ordinary cosmetics and is easy to walk past. During markdown season it's worth checking the skincare shelves separately.

FOREO is a Swedish skincare device brand. The UFO mini warms the skin and lights it with LED light, and works with FOREO masks. On the brand's site this device costs about $99, and here it's $12.99.

Shiseido Bio-Performance: a boxed set of two serums, day and night, with hyaluronic acid. $24 on the sticker versus $314 on shiseido.com
Coach hat and scarf set in a gift box: $21 on a red sticker, the tag says compare at $100
Coach Chelsea boots with an elastic panel and the signature pattern on the side: $31.99
Black Coach lace-up boots with a C on the shaft and a yellow tag: $21.99
Glossy Calvin Klein puffer jacket with a stand-up collar: $15.99
Michael Kors bomber jacket with an orange lining: $19.99
Gray Karl Lagerfeld Paris sweatshirt with a patch of sunglasses and the Eiffel Tower: $11.99
FOREO UFO mini: a device that makes a face mask in 90 seconds. $12.99, about $99 on foreo.com
