What to buy here
What to look for here
Sierra (formerly Sierra Trading Post, founded in 1986 in Reno) is a chain from the same company as TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods - TJX; TJX bought it in 2012. How it differs from TJ Maxx and Marshalls: almost the whole selection is about the outdoors - jackets, fleece, hiking shoes, thermal underwear and socks, workwear, backpacks, camping, fishing, water sports, sportswear, a big section for dogs and "cabin-style" home decor.
You'll find The North Face, Carhartt, Merrell, KEEN, Smartwool, Sorel, Altra and Born. Patagonia shows up rarely - don't count on it. The most interesting items here are winter jackets, hiking shoes and thermal underwear. Prices are up to 60% lower than at department stores and specialty stores.
The chain is growing fast: more than 150 stores in 39 states, and in 2026 it arrived in Florida. Sierra is often in the same shopping center as TJ Maxx, Marshalls or HomeGoods - convenient for covering everything in one trip. There are still few stores in California: Davis, Roseville, South Lake Tahoe and, since 2026, Visalia.
My experience
What I've noticed over the years of shopping here
I've been to Sierra only once - the chain was absent from California for a long time, and there are still few locations. The selection seemed more sporty to me than at TJ Maxx and Marshalls, but I won't judge the whole chain from a single shopping trip.
