What to buy here
What to look for here
Ross is an off-price chain with prices usually lower than at TJ Maxx and Marshalls: clothing, shoes, bags, cosmetics, toys, home goods. The brands are the same ones, but finding them takes longer - the stores are big and items are often mixed up. There's no online store; everything is in the stores only.
- Marked-down premium brands that local shoppers don't take turn up, too - these are one-off finds, but they do happen.
- There are departments with stationery and craft and handicraft kits.
- Before Christmas you can find L'Occitane gift sets.
My experience: which Ross to choose
What to look for here
Many people have mixed feelings about Ross, and I understand all sides - especially in states where this store doesn't have a wide selection. When I lived in Florida, in the Tampa Bay area, there were few good Ross stores nearby. My customers and I cleaned out the first good one within the very first month of work, and after that, for some reason, it was never restocked with decent items.
When I moved to California, I realized how different these stores are from city to city. After driving all over America, I became convinced: the selection at different Ross stores may not overlap at all. At TJ Maxx and Marshalls the selection is more or less similar from city to city, but every Ross is unique.
The main rule for Ross: the more remote the place, the better the selection. In touristy places everything gets picked over very quickly - maybe good items are delivered there too, but they're carried off instantly. In small towns, items can sit for a long time waiting for you to come get them. Choose stores in quiet, well-off neighborhoods, away from tourist spots.
