What to look for here
REI is a specialty store for hiking, trekking and outdoor recreation, set up as a co-op. About 190 stores across the country (three are closing in 2026: Paramus in New Jersey, Boston and the SoHo flagship in New York).
- Apparel: jackets and down coats, fleece, base layers, hiking pants - Patagonia, The North Face, Arc'teryx, REI's own brand REI Co-op and others.
- Hiking boots and trail running shoes.
- Tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, backpacks - everything useful for camping.
- Camp cookware, stoves and trail food.
- Bikes, skis and snowboards, everything for water sports and mountaineering.
- Small sections with items for motorhomes (RV) and travel.
In short, anything interesting for time in nature can turn up here. Many stores have gear rental and workshops. The main thing for a shopper is well-known outdoor brands at American prices.

We had one shopping trip at REI: 70 items from $10 to $224, with discounts up to 60%. Two thirds of the items cost $16-100, a third cost more than $100.
