Michaels is the largest craft supply chain in the US: more than 1300 stores in 49 states and Canada. The chain is up and growing: after Joann and Party City closed in 2025, Michaels opened Knit & Sew Shop (fabric and yarn) and Party shop (balloons and party decor) departments in its stores.
Besides crafts, you'll sometimes find home decor, textiles, dinnerware, small furniture (shelves, side tables, organizers), frames and a custom framing shop, stationery, baking supplies, and artificial flowers.
- Craft kits: diamond painting, paint by number, cross-stitch, felting, crochet.
- Yarn (Bernat, Loops & Threads), Rit fabric dye, tie-dye kits.
- Creatology kids' kits: masks, window hangings, wooden puzzles.
- Seasonal decor, dinnerware, and party supplies.
Michaels or Hobby Lobby
- Michaels is open on Sundays, Hobby Lobby is not.
- Michaels is stronger on brand-name supplies (Cricut, Crayola, and other well-known brands), has fabric and yarn since the Joann acquisition, a custom framing shop, and the Michaels Rewards loyalty program.
- Hobby Lobby has more home decor and furniture, and its 30-50% discounts move from one department to another every week (Weekly Ad).
I loved both stores: Michaels for craft materials, Hobby Lobby for home decor. If they're near each other, stop by both.
From our shopping trips
We did one shopping trip at Michaels, and it showed about 100 items. Prices ranged from $1 to $35. About a third were 50-75% off: Creatology kids' kits - $2-4, Bernat yarn - $5-7, diamond painting kits - $10-16 instead of $20-32, insulated tumblers - $5 instead of $20.
