What to buy here

What to look for here

Marshalls belongs to the same company, TJX, as TJ Maxx and is set up the same way: branded items in batches, below retail price, with a constantly changing selection. The difference is in emphasis - usually more shoes and a bigger men's section, and some stores have an expanded shoe hall. The most common buys here are sneakers, bags, jeans, kids' clothing and beauty.

This is the kind of store for "when you want everything at once, a lot of it, and cheap." The items are good quality, every product group is there, and you can buy everything for the whole family. And if Marshalls is next to HomeGoods, you can practically live there. One of my favorite department stores.

Americans like it too: in the 2026 ACSI customer satisfaction ranking, TJ Maxx and Marshalls are in first place among discount stores, and foot traffic at Marshalls and TJ Maxx is growing faster than at Ross. In terms of selection quality, TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods are often better than Ross and Burlington: more mid-range and high-end brands. In the last couple of years Ross and Burlington have also been buying more expensive brands, and the gap is slowly narrowing.

  • Shoes - women's, men's and kids'; TJ Maxx has fewer shoes but more jewelry.
  • Hair tools, including Dyson, personal care and grooming products, LED face masks.
  • Sometimes you'll find craft and hobby kits and stationery, and before Christmas, Starbucks gift sets.

My experience: how to shop TJ Maxx and Marshalls

What I've noticed over the years of shopping here

Marshalls, like TJ Maxx, has a great layout: Clearance shelves in every department and shelves with extra discounts, with yellow or red price tags. But marked-down items aren't necessarily only on those shelves - they very often turn up all over the store.

Marshalls is different from TJ Maxx: Marshalls has more shoes - women's, men's and kids'. TJ Maxx, as a rule, has only women's shoes, and fewer of them. But TJ Maxx has a department with costume and fine jewelry - more in the TJ Maxx section.
