Figures for all of Gap Inc. (Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta): in fiscal 2025 there were 32 more closings than openings. For 2026 the company expects roughly equal numbers of openings and closings.
Watch for closing sales: before closing, a store sells off its remaining stock, and discounts grow every week. Before you go, check whether the store in your city is still open - on the chain's website or in Google Maps.

What to look for here
Gap is American basic clothing for adults and kids: jeans, logo hoodies and sweatshirts, T-shirts, and the GapKids and babyGap kids lines. The logo hoodies and sweatshirts are what people buy most. Gap Factory is a separate format at outlets, with collections made specifically for outlets and prices noticeably lower than regular Gap.
It is one company - Gap Inc. - and its brands share points and a credit card, but the level of the clothes is different. Old Navy is the most affordable: basic clothing for the whole family. Gap is mid-level: American classics, jeans and logo items. Banana Republic is higher in quality and style: office clothing, linen, merino, cashmere. The company also includes Athleta, women's activewear. Gap and Banana Republic have Factory outlet lines - items made specially for outlets and cheaper.

Gap is one of the most frequent stores in our shopping trips: about twenty trips at regular Gap and Gap Factory, with men's, women's and kids' sections covered separately. Prices are almost always from $2-3 to $50-60, and most items are $6-30. The biggest discounts come when an additional -50% on clearance is taken off on top of the markdown: the final discount reached 80-88%.
Most often we picked up logo items - T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, sweatpants - and kids' clothing during sales.
