DSW is a big warehouse-format shoe store: the boxes sit right on the floor in rows by size, you try them on yourself and immediately see what is in stock. Women's, men's and kids' shoes, plus bags, socks and a few accessories. Prices are mid-range, but there are almost always discounts and a big clearance section.

Brands: Nike, adidas, New Balance, Puma, Reebok, Under Armour, Converse, Vans and Skechers sneakers; casual and fashion shoes by Steve Madden, Sam Edelman, Vince Camuto, Calvin Klein, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and MICHAEL Michael Kors; Timberland, UGG and Dr. Martens boots; comfort shoes by Birkenstock, Clarks and Crocs. Kate Spade, Karl Lagerfeld, Juicy Couture and Carhartt work boots also turn up, but not in every store. Expensive designer brands appear on the DSW website as single items, so don't expect them in a regular store.

• Clearance is a separate area at the back of the floor, arranged by size. Markdowns can be deep, but the sizes are random - you're lucky if you have a common one.
• At the top - coupons and promotions for program members, and there are days with double points.
• Back to school (July-August), and at the end of summer sandals get marked down.
• Black Friday and December, and in January winter boots are sold off.
